The institute building is part of the reconstruction project of the Hospital developed by Vignoli. In place of the old hospital buildings, the so-called. Radcliffe Observatory Neighborhood: Next door to the Institute of Mathematics, Bennetts Associates will also be home to the Humanities Building and Library. The compositional center of the development will be the old astronomical observatory, clearly visible through the corridors dividing the new buildings.
In two 5-storey buildings, the Institute of Mathematics will house all of its departments, previously scattered across several buildings. The buildings are connected by a 2-storey glazed passage, which is part of a single through atrium that runs along almost the entire length of the building. The chain of interconnected spaces thus formed encourages, according to the authors, cooperation among researchers of different specialties.
The Institute will provide a workspace for half a thousand researchers, including teachers, researchers and graduate students. And, most importantly, about 900 students will study here. The complex has three auditoriums, the largest of which is designed for 366 seats. For the offices of the teaching staff, the architects have developed a special acoustic insulation system. The offices open out onto the facades with wide windows with controllable sun screens inscribed in a concrete mesh with floor-height cells.
