The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has released a list of buildings that are nominated for the RIBA International Prize. It will be held for the first time; Buildings of any authors from anywhere in the world, the construction of which was completed within the last three years, can apply for it.
RIBA has received several hundred applications from more than 50 countries to participate in the competition for the award. The selected three dozen buildings will be visited by the RIBA Commission this summer, after which the list of applicants will be reduced to 20 participants. Then six finalists will remain from the long list, and the winner will be announced in December 2016.
An expert group chaired by Richard Rogers will decide the fate of the announced projects. Also on the jury:
- founder of New York-based architecture studio Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Partners Billy Jian,
- Nigerian architect, founder of NLÉ Projects Kunle Adeyemi,
- Dean of Architecture, School of Fine Arts, University of Pennsylvania, Marilyn Jordan Taylor,
- the head of the British studio Gumuchdjian Architects Philip Gumuchjian.
Selection will be given to projects that demonstrate “forward thinking and innovative thinking and craftsmanship” and “a special contribution to the lives of the occupants of the building and the pre-existing physical context”.
