Its full name is the Museum of the Sea and People Collecting Things Washed by the Sea (Martiem en Juttersmuseum). This is more than true for the inhabitants of Texel: for example, for centuries they have collected pieces of wood from wrecked ships and used them in construction. This "ecological" tradition determined the interpretation of the museum's facades: they are sheathed with recycled hardwood, which has acquired a noble silver color from exposure to air and moisture.
Also, the local tradition corresponds to the decision of the volume of the museum in the form of 4 gable roofs connected together, imitating the traditional buildings adjacent to the museum, as well as resembling the waves of the sea.
Behind a wooden lattice shell is hidden the second - glass, allowing the sun and the views of the sky and the surrounding landscape to penetrate into the interior. This approach was applied in the museum cafe and exhibition halls of the second tier, where finds of underwater archaeologists are shown.
The halls of the first level, located below ground level, are shaded: there is a large model (18 mx 4 m) of the Texel raid, where dozens of ships of the Dutch East India Company were anchored in the 17th and 18th centuries, waiting for a favorable wind to travel to the Far East … There the ships were repaired and supplied with the necessary supplies.
