The park will appear on the North Island (Northerly Island), an artificial peninsula connected to the embankment of Lake Michigan by a dam. It was created in 1925 as a recreational area, and the entire second half of the 20th century. there was an airfield on it. Now it was closed, and it was decided to turn all 36.8 hectares into an eco-park.
Water bodies will play a key role there: lagoons, ponds of various types, bays for fishing, etc. An artificial barrier reef will be created on the outside of the island, and in the resulting lagoon it will be possible to swim, dive and paddle. The reef will be adjacent to 4.86 hectares of reservoirs for fish breeding, 16.19 hectares of space for migratory birds, 7.69 hectares of swamps: all this should improve the ecosystem of the lake.
A dense forest will be planted on the island itself, and areas of savannah and prairie will be created. To make the park self-supporting, an amphitheater for concerts (12-14 thousand spectators) is planned there, which in winter turns into an ice rink, an educational center, a multifunctional pavilion, a zone of cafes and shops along the main alley. The plan provides for the use of wave energy to power the facilities in the park and the collection and filtration of rainwater.
The first stage of construction work should be completed in 2015.
