6,000 sustainable building ideas

Compared to the previous competition, the number of applications and participating countries is a record for the entire history of the Holcim Awards, and this indicates the widespread adoption of the idea of sustainable construction. The extensive geography of the competition confirms that sustainable building activity is gaining a global character, reflected in the variety of technical solutions presented by international project teams.

The Holcim Awards are held in parallel in 5 geographic regions. The largest number of applications came from the Asia-Pacific region - 1,779, followed by Europe 870, Latin America - 827, North America - 362, and finally Africa and the Middle East - 309.

Significant increases in the number of applications were registered in Africa and the Middle East (+ 190%), the largest number of applications in both the main category Holcim Awards and the category "Next Generation" (for young professionals and students) was also received from the Asia-Pacific region.

International expert jury

All registered applications will go through a formal review process by an architecture and urban design consultant in Berlin. Further, the applications will be presented to the jury council in the region of the proposed implementation of the project. Each jury board will have to examine a large number (from 207 to 974) of detailed projects for construction and civil engineering, landscape design and urban infrastructure design, as well as technologies for the manufacture of materials and construction products. The jury panel will evaluate the applications according to the “five key criteria” of the competition. The full list of jury panel members is available here >>

Awarding the best projects around the world

The results of the regional stage of the competition will become known immediately after the conclusion of the jury. Holcim Awards winners will be announced at ceremonies in Moscow, Toronto, Medellin, Beirut and Jakarta at the end of 2014.

The Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction is open to architects, designers, engineers, builders and students to present their designs and concepts that go beyond generally accepted building standards. The competition was initiated by the Swiss Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction. The Foundation supports projects aimed at solving technological, environmental, socio-economic and cultural issues in the areas of construction and design. The fund was established with the support of Holcim Ltd., a leading global supplier of cement, aggregates for concrete (crushed stone, gravel and sand), ready-mixed concrete and asphalt mixtures, as well as providing all related services. The Holcim group of companies is represented in 70 countries of the world on all continents.
