The one-story, almost rectangular building was created by Area Progetti and UNA2 with the participation of Andrea Michelini and Laura Cecarelli. Its shape is not as simple and obvious as it might seem at first glance: a covered internal passage “cuts” the building into three independent volumes: one is a cafe where you can also read newspapers or magazines, the second is a library, and then there is a multifunctional space with playground and youth information center. The decision to allow traffic through the building to travel to the train station next door or in the opposite direction allowed the new cultural center to be incorporated into the daily life of the area and its infrastructure.
The total area of the center, called Le Creste (which means ridges or ridges), is only 2850 m2. The constructive solution is based on round concrete supports supporting two rows of glued wood beams, then - wooden "ribs". The green roof is not exploited, but the soil layer performs soundproofing and environmental functions, reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and fine dust. The solar chimneys sticking out of the grass on the roof are painted in bright colors and resemble mysterious periscopes - something from the cartoon "Yellow Submarine". These pipes with controlled valves at the ends are used in the natural ventilation system of the building, removing heated air from the premises. Solar panels, active use of natural lighting and light control systems, special underground ducts for heating and cooling air, solar collectors and other modern systems make the building resource efficient.
The ground dug under the foundation was used to create a high (3.2 m) rampart, enclosing the building from the side of the railway. Its slope, planted with seasonal plants, together with the wooden deck in front of the library façade, forms a comfortable outdoor area.
Continuing the ecology theme, the interior walls are made of pressed straw blocks. The bright, open premises of the center are solved quite simply, but they are organized as flexibly as possible. Visitors are free to choose a convenient way of spending their leisure time: from an informal meeting over a cup of coffee, watching films and children's games to focused work and preparation of educational projects.
Even such a very small building devoid of any ambitions turns out to be capable of changing the life of an entire district. And no super-complicated technologies or very expensive solutions are required for this: it is enough just to put the interests of local residents at the forefront.
