The airport, formerly named Chiang Kai-shek, is now named after the nearby city - Taoyuan. It is located near the Taiwanese capital - Taipei - and serves as the main air gateway to the island, and is also the 11th largest passenger traffic in the world. In 2020, when the construction of the new terminal complex is completed, the airport will be able to serve 45 million passengers a year.
The project, with a budget of 74.6 billion Taiwanese dollars (2.3 billion US dollars) and a total area of 640 thousand m2, includes the actual terminal No. 3 ("mega-terminal"), which connects the existing terminals No. 1 and 2, new boarding gates, lounges, so-called multifunctional housing. Infrastructure of technical roads, aircraft stands, taxiways, automatic people mover and access roads will also be built.
All this will not only serve to develop the economy of Taiwan and the metropolitan metropolitan area, but will also activate the Taoyuan "Aerotropolis", that is, the city at the airport.
The winning Rogers Stirk Harbor + Partners project (which also includes CECI Engineering Consultants, Ove Arup and Partners, Hong Kong Limited, Fei & Cheng Associates) was delighted by the jury's combination of efficient circulation and innovative design. The RSHP architects themselves describe their project as linking the growth-oriented layout of Terminal 5, London Heathrow, and the human scale of Terminal 4, Barajas Madrid, their earlier work.
The "hard" shell of the Taiwanese terminal is combined with a "soft" lining, the folds of which separate functional areas and help to navigate in huge spaces. At the same time, the efficiency of the layout and signage system will reduce the time spent on the transfer to 40 minutes, which will be a regional record.
The project is flexible enough that the new terminal can be easily adapted to future, as yet unknown needs of air carriers.
