According to statistics, regional airports carry a little more than half of the total number of passengers - about 100 million out of 188, - sounded at the round table "New airports in Russia", organized by the publishing house TATLIN, the project "Signs of cities" and the communication agency "Rules of Communication" on Arch Moscow

New airports began to appear since 2010: as a rule, they are built for major events such as the Olympics, the APEC summit in Vladivostok or the World Cup. They often replace the old typical airport buildings that were erected throughout the Union in the 1960s, but sometimes construction starts from scratch in an open field.

The new terminals solve, above all, of course, transport problems: in the foreseeable future, you will not have to change trains in Moscow every time to get from one region to another. But when it comes to such large-scale structures, not only their main function is important: the construction of airports, for which experts predict the role of airpolises, inevitably affects the cities themselves: adjacent territories are developing, logistical schemes are changing, the economy receives new incentives.

In addition, as noted by the historian of architecture Nikolai Vasiliev, "new airports are a marker of the quality of modern architecture: design, materials, navigation show in the regions the possibilities of modern construction, which residents have probably never seen anywhere else." A large infrastructure facility based on an individual project is a kind of "inoculation" of high-quality modern architecture for small towns.

One of the main customers for the new buildings is the Airports of Regions holding. He owns airports in Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara, Saratov, Rostov-on-Don, and in the near future - also in Novy Urengoy and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The holding held an open international competition for each city. All projects are similar in that the work on them was accompanied by the search for an image, identity of the region in which the construction was carried out.

Samara, Kurumoch airport

The airport was completed in 2015 by the order of the Airports of Regions holding. It is located between Samara and Togliatti, not so far away is Ulyanovsk. These three cities with serious economic potential can provide an influx of visitors, therefore, according to experts, Kurumoch has every chance of becoming an aeropolis - a center with a business sector, as well as shops, parks and entertainment at the airport. In the near future, a railway for Aeroexpress trains will be connected to the terminal, a hotel complex, a business center and a multi-level parking will appear.

Studio Nefaresearch (since 2014 VOX Architects and Nefa architests), who worked on the interior of Kurumoch, took the space theme as a basis, since Samara is one of the centers of the country's space industry. The architects were inspired by the aesthetics of the 1960s and, in particular, by the work of Oscar Niemeyer. Smooth lines and white "sterile" monochrome with gray and black accents create a space similar to a spaceship. Bright orange appears only in VIP areas.

The airport will be commissioned next year. It is being built from scratch on the banks of the Volga: somewhere in April 1961, Yuri Gagarin landed in a capsule.

The architects of Asadov's bureau worked not only on the terminal, but also on a complex of other administrative and service buildings, creating a design code for them. For the parking lot, they proposed regular planting of trees, turning it into a garden.

The external appearance reads a wave, ripples on the water and the roll of the Saratov accordion - a local attraction. Inside, the architects wanted to achieve a calm "and even relaxed" atmosphere. The space of the hall was made spacious, filled with light and decorated with islands of greenery, as well as structures made of semicircular plates resembling clouds or airships. A huge window opens onto the airfield, around which places for contemplation are organized. Duty-free pavilions look like the skeletons of aircraft.

The engineering "stuffing" for the airport was helped by the project company "Spectrum". Chief Architect Yevgenia Mavrina said that BIM technologies were used for this, which made it possible not to deviate from the concept of Asadov's Bureau and at the same time "fill the airport with those technological processes that will allow it to work in full mode", as well as complete all this on time.

VOX Architects used Yuri Gagarin's quotes and streamlined white shapes to design the interiors of the VIP areas to convey a "sense of space, flight and modernity." There is a children's area with a capsule like Gagarin's, as well as the governor's office. ***

Lightweight vibrating structures create a spacious, light space reminiscent of a park pavilion. It is complemented by a bright green wall - a veritable vertical garden. Inside the airport, there are themed zones: for example, large flower beds and trees of the Crimea. The theme of the natural diversity of the region continues outside the terminal, in the landscaped area of the airport, which gradually dissolves into the landscape.

“First of all, an airport is a rigidly functional space,” says Yulia Tryaskina, co-founder of the UNK project. - And here it is important to do not so much beautifully as technologically. We wanted to create a timeless interior, not tied to today or tomorrow, without unnecessary "embellishments". An interior that could exist in any city, so that it is always relevant and functional. Every detail is thought out and made conscientiously. The core of the project is two forms: a “wave”, the facade lines of which continue on the ceiling, and a wall with greenery, against which the waves break. This is our first such major experience: working at the intersection of technology and design. Verified solutions, details, with very tight deadlines for design and construction. We are proud of this project. 75% of the materials that we used are Russian-made. " ***

27 companies participated in the competition for the architectural concept, and the London bureau Twelve architects won. The landscaping was handled by the Wowhaus bureau.

This airport is also built in an open field, where "before the start of work, cows grazed and harvesters worked." Alex Bitus of Twelve architects says that the building embodies the idea of an aerial bridge connecting cities.

A long skylight divides the terminal into two main areas - international and domestic departures. The dominant feature is a huge window overlooking the airfield: the entire interior is focused on sitting in comfortable chairs and observing aircraft maneuvers. To give more shade, so necessary in hot climates, the airport was covered with a large canopy. Inside, the architects wanted to create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort, since travel for many is associated with stress.

The project for the renovation of this polar airport was also carried out by the Twelve architects bureau, for which the British, according to them, studied the experience of Scandinavia - a country with a similar climate, where there is a lot of snow, extremely low temperatures and short daylight hours. The terminal's shape is inspired by the plague, the traditional mobile home of nomads. There is not as much glass as we are used to seeing at airports. Inside, they tried to create a feeling of warmth: they used wood and yellow light in the decoration.

The airport is one-story. Its important feature is that the luggage compartments are located in separate buildings. Thanks to this, passengers are not at a height of two or three floors, as usual, but at ground level, and they have views of the airfield from an unusual angle. ***

The airport on the border of Europe and Asia is the first project of the Airports of the Regions holding. In 2015, it received a four-star high rating from experts from the renowned research company Skytrax. Here the most interesting thing, perhaps, lies inside, behind the laconic facades.

The interior of the terminals was handled by studio Nefaresearch (since 2014, VOX Architects and Nefa architests) - the theme of glowing crystals was used here: a lot of color and textures turned out - an unusually bright space for an airport. The business lounge, where the theme of gems and natural wealth of the Ural region was developed, received the first Best Office Awards in the category "Business space in public interior". ***

Over

A large team worked at the airport: Asadov's Bureau, UNK project, Spectrum company and Perm architect Sergey Shamarin.

The image is inspired by a wooden sculpture of a cherub from a Perm art gallery - from him the terminal got wings of golden metal on the sides of the central entrance, designed in the form of a huge snow-white portal. "P" means Perm. Glass side facades illuminate the lobby and mezzanine waiting areas. They bear images stylized as the "Permian period", the theme of which continues in the interiors of the building.

The building was built on a small plot between the existing terminal and other infrastructure facilities. The architectural division of Hintan Associates and the Signy group (which also acted as the general designer at Kurumoch airports in Samara, Domodedovo and Pulkovo) combined the smooth undulating shape of the main glass volume with a rectangular, chopped roof and protruding awnings. The spectacular video installations were made by Nefa architects, who seem to be starting to specialize in airports. ***

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

project, 2017

The Airports of Regions holding presented the project of the Elizovo airport in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in November last year. A glass donut building around the "funnel" interprets the neighborhood of volcanoes, - explains the author of the project Nikita Tomin. Since this is a seismic zone, and the facade has an inclined surface, the builders plan to learn from the experience of Japanese engineers. According to Aleksey Bogatyrev, director of master planning of the Airports of Russia Management Company, “it will be very difficult to fit a rectangular technology into a round building” as well. ***
