What will your Digital Landscape special project look like?

S. K.: At the festival, we will present ten works by students of the School of Design of the Institute of Social Sciences, RANEPA. All objects can be viewed using VR glasses provided by Next.space. These will be three-dimensional spatial interpretations of two-dimensional prototypes - the works of one of the great artists of the twentieth century, ranging from Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian to James Rosenquist and Roy Lichtenstein.

How does this relate to the main theme of the festival this year - "Transparency"?

S. K.: In virtual reality, in fact, there is nothing. This is real, absolute transparency.

How did the idea for the project come about? What is its uniqueness?

N. V.: The idea of the project is educational. This is a formal exercise that aims to remind students that architecture and design is primarily an area of art. Designing a fantasy space devoid of any kind of functionality, students create a work of easel art, while remaining in the field of solving standard architectural problems. In this way, we remind them that the main goal of our activity is the programming of the impression, and the architecture is the immersive theater. The goal of the project is to give students the experience of experiencing space with the drama of movement in it, with work with the scale of the general scene and each of its details, without being tied to familiar forms and meanings. Staying inside the field of abstract painting, having analyzed in detail the original prototype, the student acts as a co-author of the work, creating his work, which is inextricably linked with the aesthetic qualities of the master's work. It was important for us that students see the space in a two-dimensional image, understand that absolutely everything can become a starting point for creating architecture and design.

Why were examples of non-figurative painting chosen for Digital Landscape?

S. K.: Works of non-figurative painting were chosen as prototypes precisely so that the presence of anthropomorphic characters and recognizable entourage does not direct students along the wrong path of literally translating the space of the painting into virtual reality. The task was to move away from the prototype and create your own work of authorship. Interpretation was important for us, the creation of our own space by association with the prototype, in its spatial and plastic logic. This is much more difficult to do with concrete, realistic images in front of you. Such exercises are done by students in many of the world's leading architecture schools: SCI-Arch, SAC, AA, Bartlett, Pratt.

Why is it worth seeing Digital Landscapes with your own eyes?

N. V.: It is important to see the works at the exhibition because only there it will be possible to immerse yourself in the created spaces completely and explore them. Believe me, the experience is very different from a static render and even from a video on the screen.
