About why and why this year Nikola-Lenivets first announced a competition of art objects for Maslenitsa, we were recently told in an interview by Yulia Bychkova, managing partner of the art park and producer of Archstoyania. Previously, the objects were invented by Nikolai Polissky, but they decided to burn this creation of another artist. The competition brought together 160 participants and 174 projects from Russia and not only (artists from Ecuador, France, Poland and other countries were among the contestants).
Nikolay Polissky, artist, founder of the Nikola-Lenivets art park and Archstoyania:
“We received many interesting applications, but the work of the jury was facilitated by a practical approach. The selection criterion was our experience in how an object can actually be built and how it will burn. It was interesting to look at objects from young participants, through them you can see how they live, and what ideas are in the air for the new generation. For many years I have been creating objects for Shrovetide, but you cannot do everything yourself. I would like to take a break, time to think, accumulate ideas for future projects, and this is an excellent reason to bring courage to a new idea and give new authors an opportunity to offer something, to reflect on such a place as Nikola-Lenivets."
In the end, the victory was won by the project of the architectural bureau KATARSIS "Burning Bridges". Construction will begin at the end of December and will end on the eve of the Maslenitsa celebration - it will be held on February 29 next year.
“The idea of burning a bridge is simple and capacious, corresponding at the same time to the spirit of the place, its timeless, meditative character, and the spirit of our time - restless, changeable and at the same time interesting. The idea came surprisingly quickly, it was more difficult to keep the dimensions, to make the bridge high and expressive. We were inspired by the landscapes of Nikola-Lenivets, its space and spaciousness. I wanted to create an image that is simple, but multi-layered, in which everyone would find something personal. At the same time, the burning bridge could become a metaphor for the changes taking place in the world. It was, of course, surprising to hear about the victory from Nikolai Polissky, who called us and congratulated us. Nikola-Lenivets for us is a symbol of pure, independent art, some kind of special world. It is a great joy for us to become a part of it. Let's hope that everything will work out, and Maslenitsa will be special this year,”says Petr Sovetnikov, partner of the architectural bureau KATARSIS, about the project.
