The site for HolLA, a co-working space for Second Home in East Hollywood, within the Los Angeles metropolitan area, was originally occupied by two buildings. One of them was reconstructed by the Madrid Selgascano: it is a building in the forms of the Spanish colonial style of 1964 designed by Paul Williams, the first African-American architect to officially work in the city. On the first floor there are 320 "wandering" jobs, and on the second - 200 more traditional ones. In addition, the building accommodated a cafe and restaurant, a bar, a hall for conferences and other events, outdoor terraces and recreational areas.
The second building was demolished, and a garden was created over the remaining underground garage, where 60 transparent oval modules - offices and meeting rooms for a total of 700 people - were placed between lush greenery. Their bright yellow roofs among the plants resemble a huge flower bed from above. The modules are available in four different sizes, with a 360-degree view of the surrounding garden. The soil for the plants is covered with a layer of 122 cm, that is, up to the level of the tables of the employees working inside. As a result, they find themselves "immersed" in nature.
This was the goal of the Selgascano architects: more than 10,000 trees and other plants, butterflies, ants, bees and even squirrels are unexpected "neighbors" of office workers, reminiscent of the world outside the desktop.
Such a project is quite functional: plants protect the premises from the sun and lower the temperature, transparent walls of office modules reduce the need for artificial lighting. Opening windows eliminate the need for an air conditioner, and rainwater is collected in underground reservoirs and then used for irrigation. It is also important that after the reconstruction, the 0.84 hectare plot, fully occupied by buildings and asphalt, now includes 0.65 hectares of green areas.
