There will be a library, computer and multimedia centers, and a data processing center. The building is designed for the simultaneous stay of 600 people.
IKMZ is located opposite the main university building built in 1969. It is a light "amoeba-like" volume 32 m high. Both layers of its glass facade are covered with a pattern in the form of letters of various alphabets and fonts.
The interior is decorated in bright colors: the pedestals and flooring are painted in yellow, light green, purple, crimson and dark blue, which contrast with the silver metal ceiling and white furniture lacquer.
A spiral staircase painted in purple with a massive parapet, a kind of "core" of the building, vertically permeates the structure; its volume rhymes with the spiral chandeliers.
The budget for the new building is EUR 29 million. After winning the 1993 competition, the Herzog & de Meuron architects were forced to redesign their project several times due to financial difficulties in 1999, until construction began in 2001.
