The covered walkway is just 7.5 meters long and was designed by Wilkinson Air. He connected the exhibition halls of the ceramics collection with the adjacent Secretariat building. The main purpose of the bridge is to serve as an escape route in case of fire. The ceramics gallery was expanded during the renovation (it will open in 2010), and the addition of a temporary exhibition hall extended the path for visitors to the emergency exit, making it unsafe.
An alternative option was to connect the halls with the adjacent administrative building of the museum. Due to the difference in the height of the floors, the transition is made stepwise, its frame consists of steel "frames", and the staircase itself, which makes up the lower surface of the transition, is made of perforated steel sheets; the ceiling is made of glass.
This structure, somewhat reminiscent of the Aspiration Bridge, designed by Wilkinson Eyre for the Royal School of Ballet, Covent Garden, can be seen from both the ceramics hall and outside from Crowmel Street. The bridge will be illuminated at night.
