The diamond-shaped atrium plays a key role in the construction. Its diagonal lines are emphasized by the solution of the facade, the V-shaped segment in the lower part of which is "pulled" into the building. Its borders, like the outlines of other sections of the facade, are emphasized by bronze profiles. The "elegance" of the structure is complemented by a spectacular A-shaped canopy that decorates the entrance to the building (just where the niche reaches its maximum depth).
This decision brings to mind an earlier use by Foster of the "atrium-diagonal" composition: HSBC's Hong Kong headquarters. But if both of them served as proof of the effectiveness and efficiency of the machine aesthetics of high-tech, in Hangzhou, in this construction of the "late style" of the master (let's leave the question of the degree of Foster's authorial participation: he puts his name under the project, although trademark) is nothing more than a decor, moreover, not too original.
From a practical point of view, the atrium in the building provides natural ventilation most of the year (Hangzhou has a humid subtropical climate, and in the hot season it is difficult to do without air conditioning in a 20-storey building). It is also planned to use "gray" (purified and rain) water and use local materials for construction, which do not require the cost of their delivery.
The upper tiers of the 100-meter tower will be landscaped, and, thanks to the upwardly tapering atrium, their area will be larger than that of the lower floors.
