The project was recognized as the best in an anonymous competition, where the authority of honored architects could not influence the jury's decision, as well as the fact that they were the authors of the airport project as a whole. This is a complex of five spaces on the ground floor of its main building: a chapel, a prayer room, a vestibule for each of these rooms and an entrance area are planned there.
A crucifix, an altar and benches for 10-15 believers will be installed in the Christian chapel. In the interfaith "space of silence" on the floor, bronze signs will mark the cardinal points and directions to Mecca and Jerusalem.
The walls, floor and stepped "vaults" of all rooms will be faced with bricks with a "live" texture, bearing traces of the process of its manufacture. The choice of brick will also allow to emphasize the intentional simplicity and even primitiveness of the forms, which should make the impression of the complex as "intense" as possible. In addition, brick is a reference both to the most ancient civilizations and to the traditions of the cult architecture of Berlin and Brandenburg.
The project budget is 500,000 euros, the funds will be allocated by the airport and the church authorities; after the completion of the construction, the church will pay for the maintenance of the religious space on its own.
