In 2012, the VELUX International Prize is being held for the fifth time. More than 2,100 students have already submitted their thoughts on "Light of Tomorrow" for the awards in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010. Participation in the competition is not limited to the use of VELUX products.

Today, buildings are large energy consumers to create the right lighting, so the use of natural sunlight leads to a decrease in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, which is very important for the environment. The key task here is how to transform the existing housing stock - both in urban development (school, medical, sports complexes, etc.) and in low-rise suburban - in terms of replacing artificial lighting with natural light.

At the second international VELUX Daylight Symposium, in Bilbao, Spain, renowned daylight experts concluded that adequate daylight in office, school and healthcare facilities should be a design priority for architects, developers and legislators. Professionals must be equipped with modern tools to make optimal use of daylight in buildings.

At the symposium, a sensational conclusion was made that one of the factors of the effectiveness of training, as well as the effectiveness of office work (for example, the work of a call center) is the presence of visual contact with the environment and the quality of the view from the window. The data presented by the researchers also showed the relationship between daylight and student and school performance and human health. Daylight has a significant effect on motivation and concentration. Natural light is essential for our life and lack of sunlight negatively affects our memory, well-being and mood. For a city dweller who lives and works indoors, a street walk during the day is a rarity. Most people spend up to 90% of their time indoors, so more attention should be paid to the aspect of daylight in buildings under construction.

The VELUX International Award 2012 "Light for Tomorrow" aims to expand the boundaries of daylight in architecture in aesthetics and functionality, and to increase the interaction between buildings (the people in them) and the environment.
