A project by HNTB, Michael Maltzan Architecture, AC Martin and Hargreaves Associates will replace the existing 6th Street Viaduct that crosses the Los Angeles River Valley. The current structure with spectacular arches raised above the roadbed was built in 1932 and has served as a "decoration" for many Hollywood films. But now the bridge is so dilapidated that its reconstruction was considered impossible, so by 2018 a new overpass will appear at this place.

The winners of the competition were inspired by a notable predecessor to their construction: their bridge is supported by 10 pairs of huge concrete arches, which should make crossing the bridge a "cinematic event" for the townspeople. Moreover, some of these arches will carry pedestrian paths from which spectacular views of the city will open.

Numerous descents to ground level are also provided to prevent separation from the environment typical of flyovers. Plans are underway to create a series of public spaces below and around the viaduct to revitalize the now dull area. Under the western part of the bridge, the Plaza of the Arts with a rigid pavement is planned: there will be cafes, benches, an observation deck and terraces descending to the water. A viaduct Park with a promenade, an amphitheater and a skate park will be set up in the center. From the east, the Boyle Heights Gateway will be set up with playgrounds, sports facilities, pedestrian paths, a plaza, as well as industrial buildings adapted to new functions.

The project's budget is $ 400 million, with 99% of which will be allocated by the federal and California governments, so the bridge will cost Los Angeles relatively cheap. In addition, despite its spectacular appearance, the viaduct is made up of modular elements and equipped with an ultra-thin canvas, which will reduce construction costs.
