Competition winners: "Massimiliano Fuksas Architetto" and "SPeeCH" (6005)
As conceived by the authors, the building should become a bright accent, dominant and symbol of the triumph of information technology.
Kristian Sullivan, Lead Architect at Massimiliano Fuksas:
“We made an open area in front of the building and a permeable ground floor, in fact, it is a forum, the entrances to the public space are provided from different sides. This permeability contrasts with the upper part of the building - as a kind of contrast between the rationality of the urban environment and the mysticism of the city. The shape of a building is an organic object that is constantly growing and evolving, like an idea or a discovery. The main materials that are planned to be used in the implementation are copper with a patina, which fully corresponds to the current urban trend in Moscow. We hope that our project will be important for Moscow and will affect the quality of life of the city as a whole."
Yulia Shakhnovskaya, Director of the Development Fund of the Polytechnic Museum:
“The competition consisted of two stages. At the first stage (the first stage took place in December 2012, then, based on the portfolio competition, six teams were selected - Archi.ru), the finalists were chosen by a professional jury, which mainly evaluated the technical characteristics. At today's meeting, members of the jury and the board of trustees voted with their hearts. The winning project was selected on the basis of a combination of factors; this project was immediately distinguished by the thoughtfulness of the idea and integrity, completeness. And besides, the name of the architect played a role, Massimiliano Fuksas is a living architectural genius”.
In addition to the winners of the architectural competition, the intrigue of authorship of all six projects was revealed today. Thus, we learned that
in the game announced on Archi.ru a week ago, seven people won, that is, correctly guessed the authors of all six projects: Alexey Strekalov, Vasily A. Baburov, Maria Khokhlova, Tatjana Scorduli, Natasha Kuzmina, Ann Serduk, Tim Shapkin. Each of the winners of our small competition will receive a Russian edition of Rem Koolhaas's book New York Beyond Itself as a gift. Thank you for participating and congratulations to the winners. Below we publish the authors of all projects and their brief descriptions:
Project Meganom and John Mcaslan + Partners (6001)
Cubic volume with 6 aboveground floors and 1 underground, 55 m high. A 55 m long escalator leads directly to the fifth floor. According to the authors, their building "looks like a stack of books open on different pages", forming a kind of "knowledge platform". The architects strove to achieve an atmosphere of openness and accessibility, to inspire the visitor to "jump" through the spaces of knowledge, research and opportunities."
"3XN A / S" and "Asadov Architectural Studio" (6002)
A seven-storey building with a height of about 52 m. 2 underground floors are also planned. The architects strove to create a building with no less symbolic significance than the high-rise of Moscow State University, which at one time became a monumental statement of the strength and prestige of the University. "One side is in interaction with the environment, while the other side is populated by the public and conducive to human communication."
"Mecanoo International B. V." and TPO "Reserve" (6003)
The architects called it the “extrovert house”. Visitors begin their inspection of the museum exposition already on the street. The protruding horizontal volumes, according to the architects, should inform visitors about the multifunctionality of the building. The height of the museum is 52.5 m. A straight escalator connects the entrance area and the conference center.
Farshid Moussavi Architecture and Rozhdestvenka Architectural Bureau (6004)
The building is 40 m high and 98 m in diameter. According to the authors of the project, the volume appeared as a result of the intersection of internal organization and external functions. Architects do not use direct links and associations with scientific and technical elements, which should awaken the imagination of visitors.
Leeser Architecture and ABD Architects (6006)
Seven-storey building, 52 m high, with two underground levels, the main entrance of which is oriented towards Lomonosovsky Prospekt. The upper glazed space can be completely opened in summer, transforming into a spacious terrace. The vivid imaginative solution and clear triangular geometry of the museum were formed on the basis of the canonical forms of lecture halls and auditoriums.
