The building is being erected on the top of the Kronplatz mountain, on the territory of the ski resort of the same name. This is the sixth Messner Mountain Museum, and, like all the previous ones, is located in the climber's homeland - in the Italian province of South Tyrol. Messner was the first to conquer all the "eight-thousanders" on Earth, and he was the first to climb Everest alone and without an oxygen mask. It uses its fame to popularize mountaineering and mountains, and the network of museums also serves this purpose.
The museum on Mount Kronplatz will be almost completely recessed into its slope, which will help maintain a constant temperature in the interior. In the labyrinthine exhibition space, the 3 levels of which will be connected by a ramp, permanent and temporary exhibitions will be presented, including things and images from Messner's personal archive. A small audience is also provided.
The entrance to the museum will be protected by a glass canopy designed to resemble a shard of ice. Window openings and a viewing terrace allow visitors to see a 240-degree panorama of the surrounding area, including the Dolomites and Zillertal Alps, as well as the Marmolada Peak with its famous glacier.
The total area of the building will be 1000 m2. Completion of construction is scheduled for 2014.
