The Apple store remained in the same building on Britain's main shopping street, where it originally opened in 2004 as the company's first "boutique" in Europe. Foster + Partners completely changed the interior, during the renovation, the historic façade was also restored: originally, an eclectic building in 1898 housed the studio of the mosaicist Antonio Salviati.
Now the store is a two-story hall with a height of 7.2 m, with a mezzanine floor in the back. In the daytime, it is illuminated through the arch-windows of the facade, in the evening - with the world's longest luminous ceiling panels (Luminous Ceiling Panels), which completely cover the floors.
The walls and stairs are made of "Portland stone" - limestone quarried in Dorset. The choice of material was not accidental: the facades of this particular stone define the look of London. The smoothness of the surface and the quality of the masonry were achieved through a combination of manual work and the use of computer-controlled machines. This and the rest of the key components of the project allowed its authors to talk about the "craft heritage", which they interpreted in a modern way.
The bright interior decorated with natural stone and wood is complemented by live greenery in the form of Ali's ficuses in "tubs" -bens and green walls.
During construction, 89% of waste was recycled / reused; all electricity used by the store comes from environmentally friendly sources.
