CHP KVV8 is located in the Jurthagen district next to the historic Wertaverket power plant and responds to its brick walls with terracotta profiles that cover its glass facades. They also accentuate the streamlined design of the KVV8. The appearance of a "full-fledged" architectural work corresponds to the context - offices, housing and the harbor: from the water, the new CHP is visible from afar. Therefore, an industrial building is presented as an equal object of the urban environment, and not as before - a necessary, but far from decorating structure. This corresponds to its functional indicators: with 20,000 m2 area, it is the largest biofuel CHP in the world, it generates electricity and heat for a large part of the city, does not pollute the environment, so it does not need to be hidden in an industrial zone.
For the same reason, lawns and old oaks surround it (preserving them was a particularly important task during construction), and passers-by can look inside the building - as the creators and owners of the station explain, there is nothing to hide there. With the KVV8, CO2 emissions in Europe have been reduced by 650,000 tonnes per year.
In addition to the oak trees, another important eco-consideration was the preservation of the function of the site on which the CHP plant is located, as a trail for animals moving between the southern and northern parts of the green zone of Djurgården.
Biofuel - waste from the timber industry from the countries of the Baltic region - is delivered not only by trucks along the highway: more often it comes through tunnels to the underground part of the building directly from the harbor, where a new pier was built - specifically to receive larger ships with sawdust, etc. …
KVV8 has been praised by the Swedish environmental authorities as a building. Particular attention was paid to the sound and thermal insulation of the building. Steps were also taken to create a comfortable and efficient work environment, including a high level of natural light in the premises and even a roof terrace.
