The workshop, which was organized in autumn by Shukhov Lab and Moskomarkhitektura, gathered more than 40 participants. For two weeks, Moscow students explored their city and talked about its future under the leadership of the chief architect of the capital of Moscow Sergei Kuznetsov and the chief architect of Barcelona (2011-2015), the head of the Shukhov Lab, Vicente Guayarta. The workshop was curated by Elena Mitrofanova, architect and leading expert Shukhov Lab and Pablo Goldin Markovich, architect and student of the Prototyping Future Cities program.
The participants were divided into research blocks (biodiversity, food, environmental sustainability, smart transport, cultural and social integration, etc.) and were asked to predict what problems and opportunities Moscow will face in the next 30 years, to determine what strategies and tools can be used to transform the city.
Visualizations, which formed the basis of the exhibition "Moscow 2050" in the gallery opened on the occasion of the third anniversary of Shukhov Lab, and the same one in the Russian pavilion at the Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in Shenzhen, became a clear demonstration of the research results.

Pablo Goldin Markovich, architect and student of the Prototyping Future Cities program, one of the curators of the Moscow 2050 workshop:
“Developing a vision for a city that can affect its future is an ambitious task, requiring the work of hundreds or thousands of participants over decades. I believe that the Moscow 2050 project and the works that are presented in the Russian pavilion at the Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism in Shenzhen visualize important ideas about the future of the city and its inhabitants.
On the one hand, the visions and scenarios for the development of the city of the future by the authors of the last century echoed the works of the participants in the Moscow 2050 workshop. This observation gives us the opportunity to translate the ideas of urban development into reality and realize that all the necessary technologies to realize the ambitions are already on the market.
On the other hand, it is important how the workshop participants focused their creative efforts on new urban practices, rather than simply defining specific forms or aesthetics. I believe this shift highlights how much the future is perceived as a matter of human behavior, especially for younger generations who are still attending university. In addition, the proposed evolution of different city strata over the next 30 years, which was discussed during the workshop, suggests that the idea of a “zero emission city” in terms of ecology and climate will contribute to improving the quality of life of the urban population, encouraging people to take care of environment.
I hope that the exhibition can become a platform that will allow these and other visions to become an atlas of projects and concepts of different scales and intensity, not only for the further positive transformation of the city of Moscow, as the projects currently being developed by the Moscow Government show.but also to create a methodology for innovative and radical urban design. This is the agenda for Moscow in 2050, which can be replicated in other cities of the world."
