A team of architects from the bureau ADEPT, KARRES + BRANDS and Doug & Wolf won the competition for the development of the master plan for the new Oberbillwerder district of Hamburg, which will become one of the largest construction sites in Germany: by 2025, about 1 million m2 will be built on an area of 350 hectares2 new urban spaces. The client wanted to get a plan of the "ideal city", which could be repeated in other regions of the country, and even around the world.
The architects named their project “Connected City”. The Oberbillwerder is a classic suburbia between the city and agricultural land, which will have everything you need: housing, business, shopping and public spaces, schools and kindergartens, medical institutions and sports complexes, as well as a ring park and a network of canals that unite all areas of the district. It turned out to be something like a modern variation of Ebenezer Howard's "garden city".
The environment in Oberbillwerder will be varied, and residents will be able to choose the typology that suits their style - “by the water”, “rural” or “urban”. From Oberbillwerder, it will be easy to get to Hamburg by public transport, and in the area itself, pedestrians and cyclists are prioritized, all cars remain in parking lots on the outskirts. Accordingly, the area is safe for walking and playing for children. Also, residents of Oberbillwerder will have the opportunity to engage in agriculture.
The roofs of many buildings are planned to be made green -
extensive or intensive, as well as exploited. For example, the playgrounds of some kindergartens and schools will be located on the roof. The ability to use roofing fits well into the concept of architects who want to make the urban space rich in functions and scenarios, while at the same time being environmentally friendly.
