The building consists of two U-shaped volumes lined with travertine and interconnected by a glass lobby block with 17 m high ceilings. The museum is located in the city center, next to the main square of Dasingunshimin and the former presidential palace.
The northern building houses the halls of the permanent exhibition (the largest collection of traditional Chinese art in South China) and temporary exhibitions, in the southern building there are administrative premises, an educational center, and an auditorium for 400 seats.
The travertine cladding of the facades conceals the boundaries between the floors so that the museum appears as a monolithic volume. At the same time, the alternation of stone and glass panels and metal profiles perpendicular to the plane of the facade create a lively rhythm.
