Central European University (CEU) is a Hungarian-American university that will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2016. By this time, it is planned to complete the first phase of the project, but the plan consists of three stages, the total budget of which is 34 million euros.
CEU is now based in owned and rented buildings on both banks of the Danube, but the project concerns only the main complex of six buildings in the historic center of Budapest. It is planned to renovate it, focusing on public spaces.
A large atrium will appear there, and the main auditorium will be completely rebuilt, suitable for conferences as well as concerts and performances. The library with the largest collection of books in English in Central Europe will also be updated: on 5 floors there will be 450 seats for group and individual lessons, multimedia laboratories, and a "learning cafe". Also, the changes will affect the classrooms of teachers and classrooms. The campus area will grow by 35,000 m2 in total.
The project takes into account the requirements of local legislation on the protection of monuments (the campus is located in the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the principles of resource efficiency (in the plans - certification according to the BREEAM system).
