This is one of the main public spaces in the city center, therefore, in the late 1990s, the municipal authorities decided to connect it more closely with the nearby waterfront and with the ocean. In 1998, a competition was held in which the Swiss architects won.

In the center of the reconstructed square there is a "lake" with sea water with a maximum depth of 1 m - a swimming pool for townspeople and vacationers. In its center there is a fountain-"geyser" with a height of 30 m. Around the reservoir there are pavilions made of black stone, resembling blocks of frozen lava - a tribute to the volcanic origin of the Canary Islands. On their tops are planted cacti, lichens and mosses, typical of the local flora. One of the pavilions also plays the role of a "vertical garden" with more varied vegetation. On the pavement of the square, next to which are located buildings and monuments important for the city, the outline of the plan of a long-demolished 16th century fortress is indicated to emphasize the connection between the modern city and its future with the history of the island of Tenerife and all of Spain.
