The Servete Machi School unites primary and secondary grades - from the first to the ninth, and the children also receive a musical education here. The building of the school of the same name, named after the country's first teacher of the Albanian language during the years of independence, was dilapidated and was replaced in 2019 with a new building by the tyrannical bureau Studioarch4 (under Turkish rule, schools were not taught to write and read in their native language, and only in 1916 during The Austro-Hungarian occupation managed to open the first such school for girls - on a voluntary basis).
The school is located in a densely populated area of the Albanian capital, so it was especially important for the architects to make the school a public center at the same time, which is sorely lacking in Tirana and in the country as a whole.
The construction of the U-shaped plan is organized around the courtyard, which is one floor lower than the street level. This is a safe semi-public space for children to play and communicate, here parents can wait for them after class, and there are also physical education lessons. A large staircase leading from the street can be used as a grandstand.
The main material of the facades is unpainted concrete, but bright volumes of premises open into the courtyard, which serve not only the school, but also the residents of the adjacent area. This is a bright yellow library, a turquoise gym and a red auditorium for 140 people.
The classrooms overlook the courtyard to protect them from the noise of the city; the courtyard is facing south so they get enough sunshine. Corridors and other circulation spaces are located along the outer perimeter of the building. The building has 18 classrooms, 5 laboratories, 8 music classes, administrative and utility rooms. The total area of the school is 4250 m2.
