The competition was announced in early February Krasnoyarsk regional organization "Historical Quarter", which has been engaged in the reconstruction of territories in the central part of the city for several years. The competition was held in two stages. The first is the qualifying selection, in the second the finalists were directly involved in the development of projects. Bureaus that have been working with public spaces for at least ten years were invited to participate.

The participants' proposals had to take into account the historical context of the Theater Square, its town planning parameters and planning structure, and its social function. In the final, the jury presented five projects. The authors of the three best works shared the prize fund of 450,000 rubles.

The renovation of Teatralnaya Square is planned as part of the preparation of Krasnoyarsk for the celebration of the 400th anniversary. The final project will be formed on the basis of the concepts presented by the participants, taking into account the best ideas, as well as proposals marked by the jury.

You can find out more about the competition on its website, and below we publish the works that won prizes.

The protagonist of this project is a cascade of fountains from the entrance to the opera house to the Yenisei itself. Thus, the architects wanted to emphasize the unique historical value of the landscape and enhance the terraced character of the square, linking it with the terraces of the embankment.

The concept presupposes the unification of disparate public areas into a coherent, car-free space, which will quadruple the area of the pedestrian zone and hold large-scale cultural, sports and festive events. It is also proposed to work on landscaping, transport and pedestrian accessibility of the area and qualitatively improve all environmental components: street furniture, lighting, coatings, etc.

Continuing the "genetic architectural code" laid down here by Areg Demirkhanov, it is proposed to return the original color scheme to the historical buildings, and to make all new buildings flanking the square white. In this project, the local history museum has one more building, which is delicately inscribed in the existing historical, architectural and landscape context. Its landscaped exploited roof becomes part of the promenade space of the square. Among the new objects there is also a hotel building with cafes, restaurants and trade enterprises in the stylobate part.

The main idea of the project is to reveal the space of the square in tiers on the Yenisei River and to include the river in the overall composition. In the design, the architects proceeded from the drawing of the wooden paneling of the column of the hotel "Krasnoyarsk", which symbolizes the waters of the Yenisei. The ornament is applied to the square, taking into account the historically established layout, new building elements and landscaping.

The authors of the project sought to create a large, barrier-free public space while preserving the old iconic elements. The renewed area is complemented by new functions: information stands, an open-air sculpture museum site, an observation deck, an amphitheater for celebrations and events, a place for fairs, additional green areas appear here.

The architects tried to take into account the diversity of interests and needs of the townspeople and create a space where one could simultaneously relax, hide from the bustle of the city and take part in the cultural life of Krasnoyarsk. The area is proposed to be supplemented with green areas, seating areas, art canopies and a permanent stage. The open multifunctional amphitheater is designed for holding events both in the “small hall” mode (when spectators are in the stands and artists perform on the square) and in the “large hall” mode - when the tribune is transformed into a stage, and the audience (up to 7,000 people) is free placed around. The rest of the time it is a viewing platform.

In this project, the theater square and the square in front of the city administration merge into a single space, subordinate to the general musical and theatrical style. Another area is being formed on the operated roof of the parking lot. All spaces are connected by radius pedestrian crossings.

The authors of the project propose to dismantle the cascade fountain "Rivers of Siberia" and move it to the slope of the Yenisei embankment. A spectacular projection water screen also appears on the embankment, where videos, slideshows, cartoons and laser performances can be shown.
