Back in 2015, the Toyoko Inn brand decided to conquer the Russian market and came up with a proposal to build a hotel in Moscow; the company also plans to create hotels in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities. Thus, the Moscow project is a pilot for the company, which is why it pays special attention to the corporate style, which makes the buildings recognizable for clients. At the presentation of the project, representatives of Toyoko Inn explained their adherence to the corporate style, which was clearly formed in the 1980s, demonstrating the facades of already built hotels: all of them are plates with metal-cassette facades.

The design code of the hotels of the chain, built mainly in Japan, assumes a three-color facade and square windows, as well as the use of various materials, in particular, natural stone in the lower tier of buildings. As a budget hotel, Toyoko Inn is committed to making regulars feel at home, so if the façades may be a bit off-the-grid, the interiors are repeated across all hotels. Another feature of the chain is that all hotels are designed with split systems, which to a large extent determines the appearance of the building.

This May, the Toyoko Inn hotel in Marseille, designed by the local TANGRAM ARCHITECTS bureau. As the architects write on their website, it was important for them to represent the land of the rising sun: they "used the code of modern Japanese architecture", which, in addition to some techniques in the plastic of the facade, was reflected in the creation of the Japanese garden. In doing so, the interiors followed the design code.

It is difficult to say whether the striking image is successful for a 2-star hotel. The Japanese themselves are more inclined towards the modest traditional version, and Moscow is no exception.

Meanwhile, the original version of the hotel, which followed all the canons of the brand - two parallelepipeds rotated at an angle of 104 degrees to each other - turned out to be completely unacceptable for the city, especially given the proximity of the site to the center. As the chief architect Sergei Kuznetsov said: "It looks like a panel series of the 1980s of some DSK."

Actually, the task of the authors of the second option, the Bureau "Other Perspectives", was the adaptation of the corporate identity requirements to the requirements of the city. The bureau has experience working with hotels, but this is the first time it has been working with two stars - and the category of the hotel, according to the architects, has a significant impact on the project.

The buildings of Verkhnyaya Krasnoselskaya are moderately diverse, brick predominates. Therefore, in the proposed version, it is proposed to preserve the three-color design code, but to get away from the smooth facades traditionally used in the hotels of the chain, enriching the plastic with clinker brick trim with gradient transitions between colors.

When discussing the hotel, Alexey Vorontsov recalled his work on the McDonald's building on Tverskaya - the departure from the corporate style then played into the hands of the brand, but in many respects that decision was determined by the central location of the building. Replacing the cassette facade with clinker bricks in this case, in his opinion, is a good compromise solution.

According to Evgeny Ass, an elegant solution to the corporate style of the brand was found and noted that the option in two colors is preferable, since it can be understood as a plinth with a large mass above it. He also pointed out the lack of cornice and ill-conceived completion of the building. The architects promised to think and propose a more articulated cornice or a change in the ratios of color spots on the facade to create tectonics.

After a short discussion, the architectural council approved the facade and space-planning solution, taking into account the revision of the transport scheme, as well as the removal of other technical comments.
