We are talking about a new area of 221 hectares east of the city center. It took the place of the former industrial zone of the oil industry. Now this territory has been cleared of pollution, and enterprises have been moved to the outskirts of Baku.
The name White City contrasts the development with the “Black City” - the nickname of the Azerbaijani capital in the 19th century, when active oil production began there.
The area includes 10 blocks with housing for 50,000 people and institutions for 48,000 employees, as well as green areas of 39 hectares. The general master plan was developed by the Atkins bureau, he also owns the detailed layout of 6 blocks, one of which contains a new metro station. The American firm F&A is occupied by two blocks, and Norman Foster has authored the most important site - the waterfront zone, where, along with mid-rise office buildings, skyscrapers, a concert hall, a school, and a shopping center will appear.
The project mainly envisages the construction of buildings in line with traditional architecture - in the spirit of eclecticism, but the key, "iconic" buildings will look quite modern.
Recall that the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center, designed by Zakha Hadid, is also being built in Baku.
