The settlement is being built within the framework of the state program of the same name, which stipulates that in the coming years several hundred comfortable, economical and “environmentally friendly” mansions for veterans of “hot spots” and people with disabilities will be built in the country. Prototypes of these houses have already been implemented in Fort Belvoir by the architect Michael Graves. The mansions are approximately 280 sq. m each designer named "Patriot" and "Freedom".
The uniqueness of the situation lies in the fact that the architect Graves is a disabled person himself, moving exclusively in a wheelchair. His diagnosis is paralysis of the lower extremities due to a severe viral disease suffered in childhood. “The main principle that we tried to adhere to is versatility,” says Michael, “that is, not only a partially paralyzed person will feel comfortable in this interior, but also those who have other health problems - blindness, absence of a limb or limbs, post-traumatic disorders.
Before starting work, architects and developers interviewed a dozen civilians and 20 wounded soldiers in order to better understand the problems of people with disabilities. Of course, Michael Graves also used his experience in the design process. He tried to bring to life as much as possible the very accessible environment, which is so much talked about today.
For example, in mansions for the disabled, only sliding doors are used, and the working area in the kitchen, for example, is located at such a height that it is convenient for a person in a wheelchair to perform cooking manipulations. The air conditioner is controlled here using a smartphone, sensors that react to movement are installed on all windows and doors, and video monitoring of all rooms can be carried out from a special room in the house.
Michael Graves' projects are planned to be used as standard - it is expected that at least 20 such houses will be built in Fort Belvoir.
