A new National Stadium with 71,000 spectators will be built in the capital, Tripoli, by 2017, when the Nations Cup of Africa will be held in Libya.
The arena will be located in a new sports park on the western outskirts of the city, near the seashore. There, next to an artificial lake 500 m in diameter, there will also be an indoor pool, a multifunctional sports complex and a center for family sports. These three buildings will be symmetrically located around the football stadium, recalling the meaning of the number 3 for the city (the name "Tripoli" can be translated from ancient Greek as "city of three", "Troygradie" or simply "three cities").
In the design of the arena itself, this numerical symbolism is reflected in three high arches supporting its ceiling. In addition, the stands are divided into three tiers, and the building as a whole consists of three parts: a stepped conical base, the stadium itself and its roof, the architects emphasize.
