The competition, organized by the architecture platform Archtriumph, was open to architects, designers, urban planners and students aged 18–45. His assignment was a pioneering green parking project in Shanghai. The participants had to take into account the lack of free space in the city against the background of the growing number of cars, which leads to more and more environmental pollution. The selection criteria for the best project were the use of innovative materials, the use of the latest structural developments, as well as the aesthetic quality of the building.
About 2.5 million cars are registered in Shanghai, and it is difficult to harmoniously fit such a mass of parked cars into the context, but the winners of the competition successfully coped with this problem. The idea of their project is to actively develop the coastal area of Shanghai, part of which is occupied by industrial zones. It was these now abandoned areas that it was decided to use for parking, which will also contribute to their regeneration and the creation of links between the city and water.
The project is successfully integrated into the urban landscape and does not violate its existing appearance. At the same time, the parking lot looks attractive and has a wide range of functionality. The structure is a snakelike modular structure that allows you to place elements for various purposes on it: parking itself, a recreation area, and commercial facilities. They are easily interchangeable, so the structure can be easily adjusted to the changing needs of the townspeople. This is one of its main advantages over "static" parking lots: there parking spaces are distributed once and for all, while with a flexible modular structure, users themselves form the construction program as they need it at a particular moment. Moreover, parking modules can be turned into platforms that can move on water, freeing up space on land from cars.
The ease of assembly of the modular system will quickly transform the coastal area of Shanghai, and the environmental friendliness and functionality of the structure will improve the quality of life in the metropolis.
