The building of the student union, named after Mori Hosseini, a university graduate and now a prominent entrepreneur and chairman of his board of trustees, is located on the campus of Embry-Ridll Aviation University. In its shape, the building of the New York bureau ikon.5 architects resembles a flying bird, while the metal elements of the roof take on the role of plumage - for a university that graduates mainly pilots and aircraft mechanics, there is no more suitable symbol.
The area of the four-storey building directly opposite the entrance to the university campus is 16 450 m2… The first three levels contain recreation areas, study and office premises, catering points, shops. The student center also has a post office, radio station and an event hall with a capacity of up to 900 people, all located on the ground floor. The last tier is occupied by the university library.
An outdoor terrace on the second level allows students to observe the rockets launched by the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral - it is a hundred kilometers from the university - and planes on the runway of the airport adjacent to the campus.
The central core of the building is designed as an open atrium 60 meters high. A skylight extending along the entire roof provides natural light to the rooms, mainly in the library. At the same time, an opaque reflective shell that occupies most of the roof protects students from the negative effects of the hot Florida sun.
Outside, huge "arches" formed by curved metal beams mark the main entrances to the building, and associated vertical pillars hold the cantilever roof overhang. The exposed structural elements of the building, according to the authors of the project, are an integral part of the project, designed to give the structure an airy and dynamic look.
