The building, which received the unoriginal name "North-West Corner Building", contains premises for the faculties of exact and natural sciences. On its 14 floors there are laboratories with a total area of 4.65 thousand m2, a library, an auditorium for 170 seats, administrative premises and a cafe.
On the ground floor there is a gym, which existed on this site before: one of the difficulties of the project was the need to include this building in a new building and even ensure uninterrupted operation of the gym during the construction period.
The building completes the campus of the university from the northwest and at the same time acts as a link with a new satellite campus, which will appear at a distance of 1 km from this side, in the territory of West Harlem. In the near future, the implementation of his plan of authorship by Renzo Piano will begin. The concept of building up an area of almost 7 hectares was developed back in 2004, but it took a lot of time to acquire land from private owners (who did not want to make a deal and defended their rights in court). The process was also hampered by protests from local residents who believed that the construction of a campus for one of the leading US universities in their area would cause a significant increase in property prices, and poor Harlem residents would eventually have to leave there.
